Malaysia's Budget 2027 announced a RM160 million support package to be co-funded by the government and Grab beginning in 2027. The government estimates the median net monthly income of e-hailing drivers could improve by up to RM227, while p-hailing delivery workers could see up to RM100 more per month.

These are projected effects, not a guaranteed RM227 or RM100 cash payment to every gig worker. Participation, platform rules, baseline calculation and timing require implementation details. Source: Official MOF Budget 2027 speech.

RM227 for drivers and RM100 for riders: what do these numbers mean?

Announced measure Expected impact What it does not mean
E-hailing Up to RM227 per month improvement for drivers at the median net-income level Everyone receives RM227 automatically
P-hailing Up to RM100 per month improvement Every rider has RM100 added to a bank account
RM160 million package Joint government–Grab financial commitment Money distributed equally among all riders
Vehicle maintenance and insurance assistance Planned support within the package Every claim amount or process has been confirmed

Net income matters more than gross receipts. Work-related fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance and platform costs affect what an individual actually takes home.

Is it only for Grab, or also other platforms?

The specific RM160 million partnership announced in the Budget names Grab. Do not assume that other platforms are already enrolled in those particular income and vehicle-support arrangements.

The Budget also contains broader measures for e-hailing and p-hailing contributors through SOCSO and EPF. Eligibility and contribution channels for other platforms must be clarified through the relevant agencies.

An individual working across multiple apps should check each programme separately: a platform-specific income support package, SOCSO matching, and EPF retirement-savings matching are three distinct mechanisms.

SOCSO matching: 35%, 50% or 70%?

Announced rate Target situation Key distinction
35% Matching incentive for eligible e-hailing and p-hailing SOCSO contributions Contribution support, not a 35% bonus on every job
50% Higher matching incentive if the platform company also contributes Depends on actual platform participation and formal terms
70% A separate matching incentive for about 200,000 self-employed workers across 17 non-mandatory sectors Not an extra 70% that every driver adds to 35% or 50%

The percentages do not stack automatically. Look to PERKESO for which contribution plan and coverage apply to you once the operational details are confirmed.

EPF matching up to RM600 a year

Budget 2027 also announces an EPF matching incentive of up to RM600 per year, subject to a RM6,000 lifetime limit, for eligible e-hailing and p-hailing workers.

This is not a universal cash handout. It is linked to qualifying retirement-savings contributions and eligibility criteria.

For existing 2026 schemes and the distinctions between i-Saraan, i-Suri and i-Saraan Plus, see JomGuide's EPF Incentive Comparison Guide. Do not assume every 2026 contribution condition stays unchanged in 2027.

A better way to check your actual take-home income

For example only, suppose a delivery worker receives RM2,500 in gross monthly platform earnings but spends RM600 on work costs, leaving RM1,900 illustrative net income. The following month, gross earnings of RM2,000 and costs of RM550 give RM1,450 net.

These figures are not actual Grab averages. They demonstrate why a headline projected income boost must be evaluated against each person's orders, expenses and actual payment records. Work costs can change the effect.

Five things to check before 2027

  1. Identify your work category: e-hailing, p-hailing or another self-employed sector.
  2. If using Grab, watch official partner communications for eligibility under the joint package.
  3. Review your enrolment and contributions via PERKESO.
  4. Check existing EPF contributions and the i-Saraan Plus information; watch for the new 2027 guidelines.
  5. Treat unofficial "RM227 cash registration" links with caution. A policy projection is not proof of an open cash-grant form.

FAQ

Will every Grab driver receive RM227 monthly?

No. The RM227 figure is an estimated maximum improvement at the median net-income level, not a flat transfer.

Will all delivery riders receive RM100?

That is not guaranteed. Actual conditions and income effects require implementation.

Can non-Grab riders receive SOCSO matching?

The Budget announces broader e-/p-hailing measures, but precise eligibility and platform arrangements need agency rules. Do not confuse them with Grab's separate package.

Do 35%, 50% and 70% add up?

No such stacking is announced; the rates apply to different arrangements.

Can the RM600 EPF incentive be used as wages immediately?

It is a retirement-savings matching incentive, subject to EPF rules, not an automatically withdrawable wage bonus.

JomGuide's view

Gig workers should measure the value of a policy by net income after work costs, actual SOCSO protection and sustainable EPF contributions—not just one eye-catching number on a poster.
