Updated 14 October 2026. Malaysia’s Budget 2027 proposes expanding personal lifestyle tax relief to include AI software subscriptions. That is relevant to people paying for ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools—but it does not mean every paid AI plan can already be claimed in the next return.
The official Budget 2027 speech names AI software subscriptions as a proposed additional category. It does not publish a brand-by-brand eligibility list or every condition. Under LHDN’s existing rules, lifestyle relief has a shared RM2,500 ceiling, covering expenses such as eligible reading materials, personal devices, internet subscriptions and self-enrichment courses. The final applicable law, assessment year and LHDN guidance remain decisive.
Can I claim ChatGPT Plus or Gemini?
Not by brand name alone. “AI software subscriptions” is the announced category. Before claiming a specific subscription, taxpayers need to know which products qualify, the relevant assessment year, whether it is personal or business use, whose name the invoice carries and what documents LHDN requires.
Keep genuine invoices and payment records now. But do not subscribe just because you assume the government will repay some of the cost.
How does the RM2,500 lifestyle limit work?
Tax relief reduces chargeable income; it is not a cash refund. The RM2,500 lifestyle ceiling is shared with other eligible expenses. For illustration only, assume AI subscriptions become eligible within this existing category and the limit remains unchanged:
| Example spending | Total annual spend | Amount potentially within shared relief |
|---|---|---|
| AI plan at RM60 per month | RM720 | RM720 |
| AI RM720 + home internet RM1,200 | RM1,920 | RM1,920 |
| AI RM720 + internet RM2,400 | RM3,120 | At most RM2,500 |
These are illustrations, not confirmed YA2027 filing rules. If an eligible RM720 deduction effectively falls into an 11% marginal-rate band, it might correspond to around RM79.20 in tax, not an RM720 payment from LHDN. Income, relief utilisation and rebates can change the result.
What if I paid for AI in 2026?
A Budget 2027 announcement does not automatically backdate the expansion to payments made in 2026. Use the rules applicable to the relevant Year of Assessment, rather than assuming that a subscription paid this year can be claimed next year under an announced proposal.
Save invoices showing the plan, dates, payer, actual amounts and currency. Where necessary, check the applicable foreign-currency conversion approach in the eventual tax instructions.
Employee vs freelancer vs Sdn Bhd
These are different tax questions:
| User | What needs to be checked |
|---|---|
| Salaried individual | Personal lifestyle tax relief and its qualifying conditions. |
| Freelancer / sole proprietor | Whether subscriptions genuinely incurred in earning business income can be deductible business expenses. |
| Sdn Bhd | Whether a subscription paid by the company is an eligible operating expense under corporate tax rules. |
LHDN’s business-expense guidance generally distinguishes expenses wholly and exclusively incurred to produce business income from private and capital expenditure. Mixed personal/business use needs careful allocation and records. Paying with a personal card for an employer does not, by itself, give both the company and employee the right to deduct the same expense.
AI tools are becoming everyday tools—does everyone need a paid one?
People now use AI to draft messages, practise languages, organise work and explore business ideas. That makes tax treatment worth discussing, but an eligible deduction should never become an excuse for a subscription you do not need.
Before spending, ask: Does a free tier meet the need? Are client or personal data protected? Does the subscription save enough time to justify the fee? These questions matter more than the headline “tax relief”.
Checklist before filing
- Verify the applicable assessment year and final LHDN guidance.
- Confirm whether the actual AI service and payment qualify.
- Check how much of the shared lifestyle limit remains.
- Retain invoices, account records and currency/payment evidence.
- Keep private and business expenses clearly separated.
- Never double claim and never confuse a deduction with a refund.
FAQ
I only use a free AI plan. Can I claim a subscription?
No subscription cost is incurred, so usage alone is not a claimable expense.
I am billed in US dollars. Does that disqualify me?
Currency alone is not the deciding factor. Eligibility and conversion will depend on final rules and supporting documents.
If I pay RM60 a month, do I save RM60 in tax each month?
No. A qualifying RM60 is a deduction against chargeable income, not a direct RM60 tax discount.
The takeaway
The Budget proposal recognises how common AI tools have become, but brand eligibility, assessment year, payer, purpose and the shared relief ceiling must all be checked. Treat the announcement as a reason to keep good records—not permission to claim immediately.
