Your SARA credit can help pay for groceries, cleaning supplies and other essentials. But an approved shop does not mean every product on the shelf is approved. Check both the outlet and each product's eligibility.

All 15 approved product categories for 2026

The official SARA purchase guide lists these 15 categories:

Category Examples
1. Rice Eligible rice packs
2. Eggs Approved eggs
3. Bread Selected packaged bread
4. Cooking oil Eligible cooking oil
5. Biscuits Approved biscuits
6. Instant noodles Selected instant noodles
7. Flour Cooking flour
8. Beverages Milk, tea, coffee, infant milk
9. Seasonings Sugar, salt, sauces, soy sauce
10. Canned food Sardines, tuna and other approved tins
11. Personal hygiene Toothpaste, sanitary pads, soap, diapers
12. OTC medication Eligible medicines approved by KKM
13. School essentials Uniforms, shoes, bags, stationery
14. Household cleaning Laundry, dishwashing and floor cleaners
15. Frozen food Approved frozen foods

These are categories, not a guarantee about a particular brand, package size or barcode. At the shelf, look for a SARA label; at checkout, a barcode scan helps establish whether that exact item is eligible.

Where can you use SARA near home?

Visit the official SARA website and follow its MyKasih app link. The app lets recipients check their balance, approved products and nearby participating stores. Choose a convenient specific branch rather than assuming every branch of a supermarket chain participates. Store participation and stock can change, so check before a long drive.

How MyKad payment works

  1. Pick approved essentials marked as SARA products.
  2. Present your own MyKad for eligibility checking.
  3. The cashier scans each product to verify eligibility.
  4. Pay for eligible items using your MyKad.
  5. Keep the receipt and verify the remaining balance.

If you mix eligible and non-eligible products in one basket, ask the cashier to separate payment. Pay the non-eligible portion with your usual payment method. SARA is not an ATM withdrawal or cash-out facility; never lend your MyKad to someone who promises to exchange credit for cash.

Essential Assumed cost
Rice RM28
Eggs RM12
Cooking oil RM15
Instant noodles RM8
Canned fish RM12
Toothpaste RM8
Laundry detergent RM12
Bread RM5
Total RM100

Start with food and household items you already need. Swap quantities based on your family, check real shelf prices and make sure each chosen product is eligible before payment.

What if the cashier says an item cannot be paid with SARA?

An item may fit a broad category yet have an ineligible barcode. Ask for a product eligibility check or choose another verified brand. If your MyKad itself is declined, verify recipient status and balance through official SARA/MyKasih channels. If the issue persists, contact MyKasih (03-7720 1800, working hours listed on the portal) and keep transaction details where available.

SARA RM100 versus monthly SARA

SARA Untuk Semua RM100 in 2026 is a one-off benefit for eligible adult Malaysian citizens. SARA Bulanan is separate, with monthly amounts depending on recipient category. Balances can be carried forward within the 2026 programme, but should not be mistaken for credit that lasts forever; the 2026 balance expires after 31 December 2026 under the programme rules.

For readers wondering why someone else gets a different monthly amount, that is a different question: check your STR/eKasih category rather than assuming the cashier made a mistake.

What we would do before shopping

Make a list of essentials, find one participating outlet via MyKasih and verify eligible barcodes. Use SARA to replace spending you already planned, not to buy things just because credit is available.
