MetMalaysia announced an inter-monsoon transition expected to run from 9 October through the end of October 2026. Some areas could experience brief heavy downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds, raising the risk of flash flooding and fallen trees.

This is not a forecast that every state will flood or that it will rain every day. Always check current official warnings before leaving home.

Why is this period different?

MetMalaysia's 6 October advisory, reported by Bernama and carried by NADMA, highlights parts of western and inland Peninsular Malaysia and western Sabah and Sarawak as areas where afternoon or early-evening storms may occur. The relevant risk for any journey depends on the latest local warning.

What should drivers do around floodwater?

Do not drive into flooded roads or attempt to cross flowing water.

  • Another vehicle passing does not prove the road is safe for yours.
  • Water may hide missing road surfaces, drains and other hazards.
  • Obey road closures and official warnings; stop somewhere safe or change routes.
  • Do not wade into dangerous floodwater to retrieve belongings.
  • If immediate danger arises, prioritise people and follow rescuers' directions. Malaysia's emergency number is 999.

There is no reliable shortcut that makes driving through uncertain floodwater safe.

Where can you check official warnings?

MetMalaysia and myCuaca

Use MetMalaysia for forecasts and weather alerts. Its thunderstorm-warning criteria explain that individual thunderstorm warnings last no more than six hours. Recheck them close to travel time.

JPS Public InfoBanjir

Public InfoBanjir provides relevant rainfall, water-level and flood information. It is different from a weather forecast; use both, plus official road-closure updates.

A practical household checklist

Priority Preparation
Documents Keep accessible, secure copies of IDs, insurance and essential records
Communication Charge phones and save emergency contacts
Drinking water and food Keep an appropriate emergency supply
Medication Prepare prescribed medicine and personal hygiene essentials
Family coordination Agree on an emergency contact and meeting arrangements
Travel Know official shelter or evacuation information, and check road closures

Plan separately for children, elderly relatives or household members with mobility needs.

Does comprehensive motor insurance cover flooding?

Not automatically. According to PIAM's motor insurance guidance, standard comprehensive cover generally excludes flood damage unless the relevant Special Perils extension has been purchased. Check your policy schedule, Product Disclosure Sheet, limits and exclusions.

Insurance is not a reason to drive into floodwater.

What about insurance for your home?

Houseowner insurance generally deals with insured damage to the building, while Householder insurance deals with insured household contents. Flood cover can depend on the policy wording or extension. Do not assume that every policy automatically covers flood-related loss. PIAM's monsoon guidance explains the distinction.

If flooding has already affected you

Follow authorities' safety and evacuation instructions first. Do not enter unsafe water or unstable buildings to take photos. Once the location is safe, record relevant damage and contact your insurer for claims guidance.

FAQ

Does October's transition mean the northeast monsoon has begun?

Not necessarily. This announcement is about an inter-monsoon transition.

Can flash flooding occur in cities?

Yes. Short intense rainfall may overwhelm drainage in some urban areas.

Does comprehensive car insurance always pay for floods?

No. Check your actual Special Perils provisions.

Which websites should I save?

MetMalaysia and Public InfoBanjir, alongside local authority road-closure updates.

Bottom line

Check warnings, avoid floodwater, prepare essentials and review insurance before severe weather arrives.
