KPM has released the 2027 academic calendar. Both Group A and Group B start school on 4 January, but their term breaks, mid-year holidays and year-end holidays differ.

For many parents, the first thing they look for in a new school calendar is not the number of teaching days.
It is:
When are the long school holidays?
The Ministry of Education has officially released Malaysia's 2027 Academic Calendar.
The first important point is simple:
Both Group A and Group B start school on 4 January 2027.
The differences appear in the school-break dates.
Which states are in Group A?
Group A has only three states:
- Kedah
- Kelantan
- Terengganu
Which states are in Group B?
Group B includes:
- Johor
- Melaka
- Negeri Sembilan
- Pahang
- Perak
- Perlis
- Pulau Pinang
- Sabah
- Sarawak
- Selangor
- Kuala Lumpur
- Labuan
- Putrajaya
The easiest memory shortcut is:
Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu = Group A. Everyone else = Group B.
2027 school opening date
Both groups:
4 January 2027
KPM has aligned the opening date across both groups.
Group A school holidays 2027
For Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu:
| Break | Dates |
|---|---|
| Term 1 Break | 5–13 Mar 2027 |
| Mid-Year Break | 21 May–5 Jun 2027 |
| Term 2 Break | 27 Aug–4 Sep 2027 |
| Year-End Holiday | 3–31 Dec 2027 |
For family travel planning, the most useful dates to mark first are usually the mid-year and year-end breaks.
Group B school holidays 2027
For Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and the other Group B states:
| Break | Dates |
|---|---|
| Term 1 Break | 6–14 Mar 2027 |
| Mid-Year Break | 22 May–6 Jun 2027 |
| Term 2 Break | 28 Aug–5 Sep 2027 |
| Year-End Holiday | 4–31 Dec 2027 |
Group B's year-end holiday begins one day later than Group A's.
Which break should parents plan around first?
For many families, the year-end holiday deserves the earliest planning.
Group A
3–31 December 2027
Group B
4–31 December 2027
It is the longest block and often overlaps with:
- family holidays;
- balik kampung;
- overseas travel;
- childcare arrangements;
- year-end programmes.
Waiting until December is close can make flights, hotels and leave planning harder.
Mid-year break
Group A
21 May – 5 June
Group B
22 May – 6 June
Both are 16-day breaks.
For families planning a longer trip, this is the other major window worth marking early.
Term 1 break
Group A
5–13 March
Group B
6–14 March
Both are nine-day school-break periods.
KPM's festive-holiday table also places Hari Raya Puasa in this period, making March especially relevant for balik kampung planning.
Term 2 break
Group A
27 August – 4 September
Group B
28 August – 5 September
Again, both are nine-day breaks.
This is a useful shorter window for domestic trips or children's programmes.
Chinese New Year school leave is longer than the public-holiday dates alone
Chinese New Year falls on 6–7 February 2027.
KPM also allocates additional school holidays.
Group A
- Kelantan and Terengganu: 8, 9, 10 and 11 February
- Kedah: 9, 10 and 11 February
Group B
- 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12 February
For some states, that creates a much longer school break than simply looking at the public-holiday dates.
KPM also lists additional festive school holidays
The official 2027 calendar includes additional KPM leave around:
- Hari Raya Puasa;
- Hari Raya Korban;
- Wesak Day;
- Deepavali.
These arrangements vary by group and, in some cases, by state.
If you are planning travel around those festivals, use the original KPM calendar rather than relying only on a generic public-holiday graphic.

The easiest planning method
Instead of memorising the whole calendar, add four periods to your family calendar now:
- March Term Break
- May/June Mid-Year Break
- August/September Term Break
- December Year-End Holiday
The year-end period is especially worth planning early if flights, hotels or annual leave are involved.
2027 school holidays at a glance
Group A
- School starts: 4 Jan
- Term 1: 5–13 Mar
- Mid-Year: 21 May–5 Jun
- Term 2: 27 Aug–4 Sep

Group B
- School starts: 4 Jan
- Term 1: 6–14 Mar
- Mid-Year: 22 May–6 Jun
