Updated 14 October 2026. Whether you already own a Chery Omoda 5 or have placed an order, the most useful next step is to check your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and confirm the official recall status. A model name alone does not establish whether your particular vehicle is affected.
On 11 October, JPJ announced a temporary suspension of Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) affecting the relevant Chery Omoda 5 model and variants, with new registration affected while a technical investigation continues. Chery Auto Malaysia announced a recall campaign for affected C and H variants, including free inspection and replacement of the affected component when necessary.
What owners should do now
- Locate your VIN. Chery’s official product-update page explains common locations, including the instrument panel near the windscreen, bonnet, back door and underneath the driver’s seat. Your vehicle documents may also help.
- Visit the official Chery Product Update checker. Enter the VIN as instructed and check for outstanding updates.
- If your vehicle is flagged, arrange an appointment with an authorised Chery service centre. Chery says inspections and necessary corrective work for the affected recall are free.
- Keep records of the booking, inspection report, replacement work and communication. If the online checker is unclear, contact Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888.
Use official channels rather than sharing your full VIN or identity documents in public social-media comments or unknown forms.
Does every C or H variant need repair?
The announcement concerns affected Omoda 5 C and H vehicles. That does not establish that every unit with those variant labels needs replacement. The VIN result and manufacturer’s notification are the proper starting points. Chery also stated that current production models were not affected by the campaign at the time of its statement.
If you are purchasing a car now, ask the sales representative to confirm your particular VIN, registration status and any outstanding recall in writing before collection.
Does the JPJ VTA suspension mean existing cars are banned from driving?
No—those are different questions. The 11 October action concerns vehicle-type approval and new registrations for the relevant model/variants. It should not be casually described as a blanket road ban on every previously registered Omoda 5. Existing owners must still treat the safety recall seriously.
If your car shows unusual noises, handling issues or other potential safety concerns, stop in a safe place and seek qualified assistance rather than testing whether the vehicle remains driveable.
What about buyers waiting for delivery?
Ask the dealer which exact variant and VIN you are buying, whether the vehicle can presently be registered, and what happens to the delivery schedule. Request written answers and keep your booking documents and receipts.
A registration suspension does not automatically mean every buyer has the same cancellation or refund rights. Check the signed terms and seek consumer advice if the dealer and buyer cannot resolve a dispute.
Beyond a free repair: questions worth asking
A clear repair paper trail matters. Ask what was inspected, which component was replaced (if any), when the work was completed, whether further follow-up is required and whether the dealer offers any additional arrangements. Do not assume a courtesy car or compensation is guaranteed unless confirmed under the applicable policy.
Common questions
My VIN shows no update. Is that a lifetime safety guarantee?
No. Recheck the entered number and ask the manufacturer if the result conflicts with your vehicle information or an official notice.
Will I be charged for the recall?
Chery says inspection and necessary follow-up for the affected recall vehicles are free. Confirm your booking with an authorised centre.
What should a new buyer check?
Verify the specific VIN, recall history, registration eligibility and realistic delivery timing rather than relying only on a salesperson’s verbal reassurance.
Bottom line
Check the VIN, get an official response and save the service record. This is more useful than assuming every Omoda 5 is either affected or unaffected based on social posts. Follow later JPJ and Chery notices because the investigation and campaign may change.
