Preparing for a home loan, car financing or personal loan? It helps to check your credit information before making a fresh application. But first, separate two things that Malaysians often treat as interchangeable: Bank Negara Malaysia's CCRIS report and CTOS reports and scores. They are different services, and neither guarantees loan approval.

Quick answer: You can retrieve your own CCRIS report free through BNM eCCRIS. CTOS offers a free Basic Report, but its basic product excludes CCRIS records and a CTOS Score. Always confirm current paid-report features and prices directly with CTOS before purchasing.

CCRIS vs CTOS at a glance

Feature CCRIS CTOS
Provider Bank Negara Malaysia Private credit reporting agency
Core information Financing and repayment history reported by participating institutions Credit-related records; some paid products include scores and CCRIS
A blacklist? No Not a universal bank approval or rejection list
Free self-check? Yes, via eCCRIS Free Basic Report; additional products may cost money
Credit score included? BNM's CCRIS itself does not assign a commercial credit score CTOS markets its own score product

According to BNM, CCRIS reports show borrowers' financing and repayment history over the preceding 12 months. Financial institutions use this as one source, not an automatic decision engine.

How to retrieve your CCRIS report free

  1. Go directly to the official eCCRIS portal. Check that the address is eccris.bnm.gov.my.
  2. First-time users can select Register Now. BNM's online registration route has eligibility requirements such as being a Malaysian individual with MyKad and internet banking; others should check authorised alternatives including AKPK kiosks and BNMLINK.
  3. Complete registration and identity verification through official steps. eCCRIS uses multi-factor authentication (MFA). Never share your password or verification codes.
  4. After login, select ENQUIRY → Self Enquiry – Individual.
  5. Accept the disclaimer and choose Report Enquiry.
  6. Review your own financing accounts and repayment records carefully.

Interface details can change; BNM's current on-screen instructions take priority.

What should you check in CCRIS?

Start with the basics:

  • Account ownership: Are all listed financing facilities actually yours?
  • Recent repayment patterns: Look through the historical months instead of fixating on a single number.
  • Repaid or closed facilities: Check whether the reported information matches your statements and later updates.
  • Overall commitments: Understand how existing monthly payments affect your budget.
  • Errors: Compare with bank statements, receipts and settlement letters where needed.

Illustrative example: A borrower has repaid a housing instalment on time for several months but remembers a late card payment earlier in the year. Rather than assuming a permanent blacklist, the borrower should compare the dates and documentary evidence, then ask the reporting lender if anything appears incorrect.

What does the free CTOS Basic Report include?

CTOS currently describes its free Basic Report as covering information such as personal details, business/directorship interests, litigation/bankruptcy records and trade-reference listings. It does not include the CTOS Score or CCRIS records in this basic product.

CTOS also offers more detailed reports and services, which may carry fees. Check the current CTOS product comparison; promotions and pricing may change. For a straightforward free check of BNM repayment records, eCCRIS is the direct route.

My loan was rejected. What now?

A rejection does not mean BNM blacklisted you. Lenders may assess income, payment commitments, repayment history, submitted documents and their own criteria.

A practical sequence:

  1. Ask the lender whether it can share the main concerns behind the application (not all internal criteria may be disclosed).
  2. Obtain your free eCCRIS report and verify the accounts and repayment history.
  3. Use other suitable credit reports if you need to check additional public or commercial information.
  4. Where you discover an error, contact the financial institution that submitted the information and the relevant reporting provider. Keep payment evidence or settlement letters when asking for corrections.
  5. Review your income documents, affordability and current borrowing rather than submitting multiple applications blindly.

Which report should I use?

If you want to know what banks reported about your financing and repayments, begin with CCRIS.

If you want additional information such as business relationships, public records or a private CTOS Score, consider whether a CTOS product meets that purpose.

It is not a contest. They solve different information problems.

FAQ

Will checking my own CCRIS reduce my score?

CCRIS itself is not a commercial credit-scoring service. Checking your own report is different from taking on new financing.

Can someone remove my legitimate repayment history for a fee?

Treat promises to “wipe” accurate records as a warning sign. Resolve genuine repayment issues and use official correction procedures for inaccurate entries; do not reveal account credentials.

Who should I contact about a mistake?

Begin with the institution that supplied the data, and follow the relevant provider's formal dispute process. BNM's CCRIS FAQ explains the available routes.

Bottom line

Know what each report actually contains before paying for it. Free eCCRIS is useful for checking your financing history; free CTOS Basic covers different information and does not contain a CTOS Score. Loan approval ultimately depends on the lender's own assessment.
