Flight Delayed by Haze in Malaysia? What You Can Claim at 2 or 5 Hours on AirAsia and MAS

When haze affects visibility at Senai, KLIA or another Malaysian airport, you may face a delay, diversion or cancellation. What you can ask for depends first on what happened to your flight and how long the disruption lasts—not just on whether the cause was weather. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines also have different ways to request help.

This guide is checked against official information available 9 October 2026. International connections and flights operated by another airline may involve additional rules.

Your rights at 2 hours, 5 hours and cancellation

Situation CAAM consumer guidance Your next action
Delay of 2 hours or more Meals, telephone calls and internet access Ask airline staff at the gate about assistance and the revised departure time
Delay of 5 hours or more Meals and communications, plus hotel accommodation and airport transfers when necessary or a full refund if you choose not to continue your journey Choose between staying with the trip and claiming your eligible refund
Flight cancelled Choose a full refund or rerouting to your final destination under comparable transport conditions Ask the operating airline for written available options

For eligible full refunds, CAAM's official page specifies the ticket cost, including taxes and fees, back to the original payment method within 30 days. Do not click a voluntary-cancellation option before checking your disruption rights.

Does bad weather cancel your rights?

No. Weather can explain why it is unsafe to fly, but it does not automatically remove the assistance and refund rights described by CAAM. However, an airline's legal duty to provide care or a refund is not the same thing as promising cash compensation for a missed holiday, a separately booked hotel or every extra expense.

Separate three questions:

  1. Basic passenger protections: What CAAM says the airline must do at the relevant delay threshold.
  2. The airline's own recovery system: How it offers rebooking, credit or refunds for your specific carrier and route.
  3. Consequential costs and insurance: Extra accommodation, events, third-party bookings and travel insurance claims depend on their own evidence and terms.

An airline may provide more options than the baseline rules. Do not assume another airline or route has exactly the same recovery choices.

AirAsia: check your carrier code and notification

AirAsia's official flight disruption guide says recovery options vary by the length, reason and operating flight code. It distinguishes services such as AK and D7 and treats some domestic and unforeseen-event disruptions differently.

That means a screenshot promising refunds after a particular delay on one AirAsia service is not necessarily a universal rule for every AirAsia flight. Malaysian flights also remain subject to applicable CAAM protections.

AirAsia action steps

  1. Open AirAsia MOVE and check the exact flight number, status and revised estimated departure.
  2. Check the SMS or email sent to your booking contact for a disruption-specific recovery link.
  3. Use the airline's official link or AskBo to inspect available Move Flight / Credit Account / Refund options for that booking.
  4. At the airport, request meals and other assistance if the applicable delay threshold has been reached.
  5. If eligible for a full refund and you do not want credit, ask for refund to your original payment method. Keep the case reference.

If your booking was made with a travel agent, you may need to contact the agent for ticket servicing while still checking the airline's obligations. A self-initiated change before the airline formally disrupts the flight can be treated as a voluntary change.

Malaysia Airlines: use AskMH, not AirAsia's workflow

For MAS, go to its official AskMH portal. It provides Manage Booking, Refund Matters, Feedback, Travel Letters and case tracking. These are official routes for managing a disruption, asking about refunds and requesting documentary evidence.

Malaysia Airlines action steps

  1. Record your booking reference, flight number, original time and revised departure.
  2. Ask Malaysia Airlines airport staff or official support whether you will be rerouted and what assistance is available.
  3. If you will not continue the journey after a qualifying disruption, make clear that this is a disruption refund request, not a voluntary cancellation under a restrictive fare.
  4. If you need insurance documentation, use Travel Letters to seek confirmation of the disruption and its reason.
  5. Keep the request and response reference numbers.

For either airline, read the terms applicable to the actual operating carrier on each segment. If a trip involves onward connections or a separate ticket, ask specifically what the recovery option covers.

What if the airline offers only a voucher?

For cases covered by CAAM's eligible cancellation or five-hour delay refund rights, a voucher or credit account is an alternative, not the only compulsory form of refund. CAAM explains the right to return of the payment in its original mode.

If the app presents only a voucher:

  • Take a screenshot of the offer and your flight's delay/cancellation notice.
  • Contact the carrier through an official channel, giving the booking reference and the exact delay or cancellation.
  • Ask the airline to explain and process your full eligible refund in the original payment method.
  • Do not confirm credit unless you actually want it.

Keep in mind: choosing to cancel a flight voluntarily before a qualifying airline disruption can trigger different ticket rules.

Save these documents before leaving the airport

Keep the original booking, boarding pass, flight number, scheduled and revised departure times, airline SMS/emails, app screenshots, cancellation notification and service case IDs. Save receipts for necessary meals, transport or accommodation you paid for yourself, but a receipt alone does not guarantee reimbursement.

For a separate travel-insurance claim, check policy wording on weather exclusions and qualifying delay hours. Insurance providers may need an airline-issued delay/disruption letter. Malaysia Airlines provides a Travel Letters request path; other airlines may have their own method.

Complaint route if help or refund is refused

First make a formal complaint to the operating airline. According to CAAM's complaints procedure, airlines should acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and resolve them within 30 days. If it remains unresolved after 30 days, you can submit the record and evidence to CAAM via FlySmart.

Use a specific complaint: flight number, date, timeline, assistance or refund requested, what staff said, and the airline case number. This is much more useful than a general post on social media.

Quick decision to take away

Less than 2 hours: monitor official updates and avoid prematurely cancelling. At 2 hours: ask for meals and communication assistance. At 5 hours: compare continuing with necessary care versus an eligible full refund. Cancelled: request rerouting or a refund.

Most importantly, treat an airline-caused disruption as a disruption—do not accidentally convert your claim into an ordinary voluntary cancellation.
