Malaysia Passport Online Renewal 2026: Photo Rules, Fees and What to Bring for Collection

The hardest part of MyOnline Passport is often the photo, not the payment. This guide covers online eligibility, 2026 photo rules, fees, who must apply at the counter and what to bring when collecting your passport.

Ask people what tends to go wrong with MyOnline Passport and one answer comes up often: the photo.

A background that is not properly white, the wrong clothing, glasses, an old image or an AI-edited photo can delay or derail an otherwise simple application.

This guide follows the current 2026 rules published by the Immigration Department of Malaysia and MyGovernment, from eligibility to collection.

Step 1: Check whether you can renew online

MyOnline Passport is an online renewal service for the Malaysian International Passport.

Current Immigration guidance says several categories must use the counter instead of the normal online route, including:

  • persons with disabilities (OKU);
  • children aged 13 and below;
  • students going overseas for Bachelor's degree study;
  • Hajj pilgrims;
  • people whose current passport is lost;
  • people whose current passport is damaged, wet, burnt or otherwise not in good condition.

Some applicants may also be directed to a counter if the system detects fingerprint-data problems, eligibility issues or inconsistent information.

If you see an error telling you to refer to an Immigration office, do not keep resubmitting random information. The issue may need to be resolved at the counter.

Step 2: Get the photo right before starting the form

This is the part worth preparing first.

MyOnline Passport currently requires:

  • a white background without shadows;
  • dark clothing covering the shoulders and chest;
  • for applicants wearing a hijab, a dark and plain hijab that does not cover the face;
  • no spectacles;
  • no contact lenses;
  • no inappropriate accessories on the face, ears or head;
  • a recent photo — the current page states within one month.

The Immigration Department also warns that AI-generated or AI-altered photos are not accepted.

A non-compliant photo can cause an application to be held for a replacement image. The current terms also warn that applications involving AI photos or photos that do not meet the stated rules may be rejected without a refund.

So prepare the photo before you begin the application rather than improvising one at the final upload screen.

Step 3: Keep your current passport and MyKad ready

Online renewal does not mean you can collect the new passport empty-handed.

For applicants 18 and above, Immigration currently requires the following at collection:

  • MyKad;
  • current passport;
  • printed payment receipt.

For applicants under 18, the applicant must attend with a legal parent or guardian and bring:

  • the applicant's MyKad;
  • the applicant's birth certificate;
  • current passport;
  • the accompanying parent or legal guardian's MyKad;
  • printed payment receipt.

A practical extra step is to carry photocopies of important documents as backup, especially if you are travelling some distance to collect the passport or helping a family member.

That is a practical precaution, not a claim that Immigration requires every applicant to submit photocopies in all cases. The official collection list above is the key requirement.

Step 4: Complete the MyOnline Passport application

The online process can be understood in this order:

  1. enter the official MyOnline Passport service;
  2. read and accept the terms;
  3. enter the information requested by the system;
  4. upload a compliant photo;
  5. choose an available passport collection office;
  6. review the details;
  7. pay online;
  8. save the receipt and application record;
  9. follow the system status or instructions for collection.

The official service allows applicants to choose from passport issuing offices listed in the system.

Step 5: The fee is not RM200 for everyone

The current online fee schedule is:

  • Age 13–59: RM200
  • Age 60 and above: RM100

Payment is completed online. The MyOnline Passport page lists debit card, credit card and internet banking/FPX options.

Keep the payment receipt. You will need the printed version for collection.

Step 6: Do a final photo check before submitting

Before uploading, ask:

  • Is the background genuinely white and free of shadows?
  • Are you wearing dark clothing that covers the shoulders and chest?
  • Are glasses and contact lenses removed?
  • If wearing a hijab, is it dark, plain and clear of the face?
  • Was the photo taken recently?
  • Did you use any AI editing, beauty filter or face alteration?
  • Has your phone created a mirrored image?

Immigration specifically reminds applicants to watch for mirrored phone-camera images.

Step 7: Do not turn up for collection with only your phone

For an adult applicant, the simple checklist is:

MyKad + current passport + printed payment receipt

That printed receipt is easy to overlook when most of the application happened digitally.

Our practical tip is to prepare the official originals first, then carry a set of photocopies as backup if convenient. It can save trouble if extra verification is needed, but the copies do not replace the documents Immigration explicitly asks you to bring.

What if the old passport still has several months left?

You may not lose all of that remaining validity.

MyGovernment states that up to six months of remaining validity from the old Malaysian passport may be transferred into the new one in eligible cases.

Conditions include that the passport is not a lost or damaged case and that the holder is not subject to certain investigations or restrictions.

Why the six-month point matters before overseas travel

“Not expired yet” is not always enough for international travel.

Different destinations and travel arrangements can impose passport-validity requirements, and the six-month mark is a common point travellers need to watch.

If you are planning a trip to Singapore, Thailand or anywhere else while your passport has only a few months left:

  • check the destination's official entry rules;
  • confirm the passport validity required for your trip;
  • renew early if needed rather than leaving it until the final few days.

The three things most people should remember

If you only remember three points:

  1. The photo is the easiest part to get wrong — white background, dark clothing, no glasses or contact lenses, recent image, no AI alteration.
  2. Fees depend on age — RM200 for ages 13–59 and RM100 for 60+.
  3. Bring the collection documents — especially MyKad, current passport and the printed receipt.

The online form itself is manageable.

The avoidable problems are usually the photo or arriving at the collection counter without the right documents.

Useful? Forward it to someone who needs it.
