What Should You Eat in JB Tonight? Choose Dinner and Supper by Budget, Craving and Closing Time

This is not another generic '10 best JB foods' list. It is a decision guide for tonight: choose by budget, craving, closing time and practical access, with six Johor Bahru dinner and supper directions.

What Should You Eat in JB Tonight? Choose Dinner and Supper by Budget, Craving and Closing Time

Source: Source: Current local business listings and restaurant information accessed 7 Oct 2026; hours and prices can change. Always verify before travelling.

At 7pm, 9pm or even 11pm, the group chat question is always:

“What should we eat?”

Johor Bahru does not lack food.

The problem is too many choices.

So this is not another “Top 10 Must-Eat JB” list.

We are choosing by:

budget + craving + how late the place stays open.

Opening hours, menus and prices can change, especially on public holidays, during Ramadan or when a business closes temporarily. Check the latest listing before leaving.

The fastest answer

Under RM20

For Malaysian comfort food: ZZ Sup Tulang

For something strongly associated with Johor: Kacang Pool Haji

For flexible street-food choice: Meldrum Walk

RM20–40

For a proper late supper: Restoran Woon Kiang

Around RM40–60

For a group dinner: HAVOC Hotpot

Very late at night

For skewers and a place that stays open much later: BBQ Doubtful Life

1. ZZ Sup Tulang — easy budget, soup and late-night comfort food

Best for: under RM20 / Malay food / supper

The current listing for the Kampung Bahru outlet shows:

  • roughly RM1–20 pricing;
  • opening until around midnight on many days;
  • late-night food;
  • halal food listing.

If tonight’s craving is:

  • sup tulang;
  • rice;
  • hot soup;
  • simple comfort food;

it is a straightforward option.

The value is not fancy décor.

It is an easy budget and a broad enough menu for a casual group.

2. Kacang Pool Haji — a more Johor-specific choice

Best for: under RM20 / local flavour / quick dinner or supper

The Larkin listing currently shows:

  • about RM1–20;
  • some listings open until around 1:30am;
  • halal food listing.

If someone visiting JB asks:

“What feels more local?”

kacang pool is a more distinctive answer than another generic café.

3. Meldrum Walk — useful when everyone wants something different

Best for: under RM20 / street food / mixed cravings

Meldrum Walk Street Foods currently shows:

  • roughly RM1–20;
  • opening until around 11:30pm on listed days.

The advantage is variety.

One person can get noodles, another wants snacks, another only wants a drink.

The group does not have to agree on one restaurant menu.

The trade-off is city-centre access and parking, which can vary with timing.

4. Restoran Woon Kiang — when dinner starts late

Best for: RM20–40 / noodles / late supper

The current listing for Restoran Woon Kiang in Taman Stulang Laut shows:

  • roughly RM20–40;
  • about 5pm–2:30am daily;
  • more than 2,000 reviews;
  • late-night food;
  • possible waits during busy periods.

If you only finish an activity at 10pm and still want a real meal, the 2:30am closing time is the main advantage.

5. HAVOC Hotpot — for a group that wants to sit and talk

Best for: RM40–60 / group dinner

The current Taman Sutera Utama listing shows:

  • around RM40–60;
  • opening until about 11pm;
  • group-dining positioning.

Hotpot makes sense when:

  • several friends are meeting;
  • the group wants to sit longer;
  • everyone wants different ingredients.

It makes less sense if you only start looking for dinner at 10:30pm.

6. BBQ Doubtful Life — for true night owls

Best for: skewers / barbecue / very late supper

The current listing shows:

  • around 6:30pm–4am opening hours;
  • skewers with a wide range of item prices, with some starting at low single-digit ringgit;
  • Szechuan-style BBQ focus.

At 1am, the list of normal dinner restaurants becomes much shorter.

A place open until 4am is useful specifically because of the time.

Dietary note

If you have halal or other dietary requirements, do not infer status from photos or the business name.

Confirm the current ingredients and certification/status directly before visiting.

Choose by budget

RM10–20

Start with:

  • ZZ Sup Tulang
  • Kacang Pool Haji
  • Meldrum Walk

RM20–40

Consider:

  • Woon Kiang
  • a larger street-food order

RM40–60+

Consider:

  • hotpot;
  • group-style dinner.

Choose by craving

Hot soup

ZZ Sup Tulang

Johor local food

Kacang Pool Haji

Everyone wants something different

Meldrum Walk

Proper meal after 10pm

Woon Kiang

Group dinner

HAVOC Hotpot

1–3am supper

Look for genuine late-night barbecue or supper options such as BBQ Doubtful Life.

Parking matters too

For an unplanned dinner, parking is part of the decision.

A restaurant can be excellent, but if:

  • finding parking takes 20 minutes;
  • someone in the group is in a rush;
  • access is difficult at peak hour;

the real experience changes.

That is why JomGuide food recommendations should look beyond taste alone.

We will also consider:

  • price;
  • operating hours;
  • access and parking;
  • group size;
  • craving;
  • whether the place is worth a special trip.

Time changes the shortlist

7pm

Almost everything is available.

Hotpot, family dinner and cafés all work.

9pm

Check closing time before leaving.

A place closing at 10pm may not be worth travelling to at 9:30.

11pm

Real supper places become more useful.

1am

Opening hours matter more than rankings.

This is not a permanent ranking

Food quality, prices and hours change.

So the point is not to declare one place:

“The best restaurant in JB forever.”

The point is:

Which place fits what you need tonight?

Ask three questions

1. What is the budget?

Under RM20, RM20–40 or RM40+?

2. What are you craving?

Soup, local food, street food, hotpot or barbecue?

3. What time is it?

A 7pm dinner and a 1am supper need completely different shortlists.

That is usually more useful than scrolling through ten “best food in JB” lists and still not deciding.

Useful? Forward it to someone who needs it.

Malaysian policy and hot topics, 2–3 items a week, each with a one-line “so what”.
